Billy Danielson - We both knew this day would come…
We open on the UWL World Champion, Billy Danielson, standing on the stage ramp in an empty arena. The skeleton of a wrestling show is still getting built around him, as he looks out to where the fans will soon fill.
Billy Danielson - Whether it was going to be in UWL or Mainstream, it didn’t matter. You and I were always going to find ourselves back on the other side of that ring, just like we did seven years ago in that very ring…
Billy points out where the setup crew was currently building the crowd.
Billy Danielson - When I made my name at the expense of yours for the very first time.
Danielson smirks and laughs a bit under his breath, as he thinks back to his rookie year and his first defining match.
Billy Danielson - The Great Robert Daniels was returning for one night only after Caleb Hart had to retire due to injury because Lt. Bowers still needed a tag team partner for the Coronation Tag Cup. It was supposed to be a wash too. The winningest and losingest wrestler in UWL history, Autumn Raven, teamed with some no-name kid who was struggling to find himself.
He pauses for a moment. This stroll down memory lane seems to brighten Billy’s relatively somber tone.
Billy Danielson - “Put your stock in Future Flock” Autumn and I used to say…
Another hushed laugh.
Billy Danielson - I don’t know how much you remember about that night, Robb, but I will never forget it. You and Bowers ignored Autumn and me in the build-up, saying that I was too young to call myself the Greatest of All Time. Most would’ve just curled up and taken the L, but not I. I told you I was going to be changing the guard, becoming the future of UWL, and that I was going to make you regret not taking me seriously. Then I pinned you square in the center of the ring by dropping you on your head, and in the only act of selflessness you’ve probably ever shown, you walked up to me backstage, shook my hand, and said I had just backed up everything I said. You labeled me as the future of this company, and I never forgot that.
Billy looks down at his UWL World Championship and thinks of how far he has come from that defining moment in his career.
Billy Danielson - Everyone tried to take the moment away from me. “He was probably drunk after missing that lay-up of a match, that’s why he said that.” “You can’t trust anything Robb Daniels says.” “That doesn’t sound like Robert, he’s too self-centered.”
He shakes his head.
Billy Danielson - Sometimes I wish I had listened to them. Sometimes I wish I had never met you, and that my career didn’t have your name all over it.”
Danielson takes a deep breath before continuing as if trying to quiet the old-school hare he used to receive.
Billy Danielson - But neither of us would be here right now if I hadn’t. When I was having growing pains in 2016, who gave me a home company to wrestle for? You did. When everyone was leaving Mainstream, who stayed? I did. Who told me to finally return to UWL? You did. When you were feeling burnt out on this whole damn industry, who got you through it? Me.
Billy points to himself. Robert and Billy have been on a blended path for so long, it’s almost impossible to separate the two careers over the near decade they’ve known each other.
Billy Danielson - Which honestly sucks, because despite spending my entire career either sticking by you or sticking it to you, you still refuse to see me as anything other than that kid you met in 2015.
You can tell Danielson is holding back tears here, as he readjusts his UWL World Title on his shoulder.
Billy Danielson - I used to give you so much credit for my career too, but seeing you mock me these last few months… hearing my supposed mentor openly doubt my abilities in the ring… watching you cost me opportunities for no other reason than for your pleasure… I realized something so important.
He tilts his chin up and puffs out his chest a bit.
Billy Danielson - I didn’t succeed in this industry BECAUSE of you. No, I succeeded DESPITE you.
Billy’s tone starts to get fierier as he continues.
Billy Danielson - Years of you trying to put me down. Years of you refusing to give me the credit I deserve for keeping you relevant when nobody asked me to. Years of hearing about if I had faced you in your prime, I wouldn’t be the man I am today anymore…
He raises his championship high in the air.
Billy Danielson - WELL NEWS FLASH ROBB… I AM THE MAN I AM TODAY!!! You as a Hall of Famer couldn’t beat me as a rookie, so how do you expect to beat me as YOUR Hall of Famer? How are you going to belittle me, when you could never measure up to me in the first place? How are you going to stand there and tell me UWL is yours for the taking, WHEN YOUR OWN COMPANY, MAINSTREAM WRESTLING, ISN’T EVEN YOURS BECAUSE I’M THE FRANCHISE THERE TOO!!!
Danielson is so fired up, he looks like he could burst. The amount of energy he is exuding makes him seem as if he’s floating on air.
Billy Danielson - I am not your student anymore. I am the Master now. I am The G.O.A.T. that you said I wasn’t good enough to be, and I’m going to beat every ounce of respect out of you that you have never given me in all these years of your supposed mentorship.
Billy starts to calm himself down a bit, not wanting to use all that pent-up aggression on just his promo. He takes a deep breath and places the UWL Championship back on his shoulder.
Billy Danielson - After tonight, maybe you’ll finally learn not to underestimate me.
Danielson smirks as the camera pans out over the nearly finished UWL set-up and he heads towards the back to get ready for the match.
