Scene fades in to mid-ring at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium as over nine-thousand fans have just witnessed a hellacious final match of the 2024 Coronation Cup between current UWL World Champion Cory Chevelle and the former UWL World Champion, #1 Daron Smythe. Smythe has just been announced as the winner and just after having his hand raised, drops down to his knees, face covered in blood, an exhausted heap in the center of the ring. Streamers rain in from all sides, covering the ring in a layer of paper. Smythe emerges from the fan fare, jumping up on the middle rope, beating his chest and looking out to the fans, before pointing towards Cory Chevelle, the Silverback, slowly walking up the ramp, cursing at the ring, Smythe, and the fans in attendance. Smythe makes the belt motion around his waist, then pointing to Chevelle, who barks back. Smythe then points to the crowd, who responds with adulation, cheering and putting their own #1 salute in the air. Smythe hops down from the turnbuckle and beckons to the ringside area for a microphone before finally addressing the crowd….
DARON: Thirty-seven years ago, I was just like this kid *points to the front row* dragging my mom to a WWF wrestling show, marveling at these real life superheros waging war, seeing someone like The Ultimate Warrior and dreaming of being someone like that one day. I don’t think anyone would confuse me with the Ultimate Warrior *chuckles* but I remember being that kid and I hope, even though I’m not built like an adonis, that you see that if you put the work in, you can accomplish great things.
One year ago, at this very event, I was raising the UWL World Heavyweight Championship belt high above my head and while I was beyond excited in that moment, right after that announcment hit, the next thought in my mind was “What’s next? Am I really ready for this?” I didn’t give myself the time to really soak it all in, nor did I really know what I was going to do now that I had finally achieved that great accomplishment I had been prophesizing week after week. But today? Today I’m going to take my time. I’m going to remember this moment. And I know exactly what I’m going to do if and when I hold that World Title belt again.
Am I getting ahead of myself? Maybe. But I’m feeling good tonight. Tonight I did something that even I wasn’t completely sure I could do. Cory Chevelle has looked absolutely unstoppable as his time here in the UWL. When David Carroll was coming after me, I knew I could navigate the psychological games but Chevelle is a beast capable of inflicting unholy amounts of physical pain and punishment. Can I do it again? God, I don’t even know. But, I did it tonight. It is possible. And I can’t describe the feeling to all of you right now, but I’ll try my best. As much as I claim to be #1, there was a deep, dark part of me that thought I would never ascend to the mountaintop again. I had even thought to myself that being the Heritage Champion could be a very worthy goal to shoot for - I was never going to have a realistic shot again.
Iron sharpens iron. Robb Daniels, Billy Danielson, Cory Chevelle - a literal murderer’s row to win this cup. Robb has been THE guy in the UWL - the guy to beat me very early in my time here and show me that everything was going to have to be earned. Directly and indirectly one of the people who taught me the harshest but most necessary lessons. Billy Danielson - The GOAT and rightfully so. A guy I was able to get a cheap victory over that didn’t even count in my own mind.
This feels good, y’all. It feels like I’m back. Tonight, I’m going to enjoy this, but tomorrow, it’s time to go back to work…
