The Universal Wrestling Council is alive and well in the Southeastern part of Tennessee as fans pack the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga. The air is as electric as the fans are as they await to see what else the UWL has in store for them. Something the fans are anxiously waiting for is the main event, a “Double Jeopardy” match where UWL World Champion Cory Chevelle defends against Universal Stampede Winner Jackson Burnside, Coronation Cup Winner Daron Smythe, and UWL Heritage Champion Billy Danielson.
It was the latter-most of which was walking into the view of the camera, as Billy Danielson entered the promotional center. He is wearing his UWL Heritage Championship around his waist with pride as he makes it to his mark. He takes a deep breath, inhaling the energy of the fans and exhaling any doubt (as if he had any), and then smirks at the camera.
Billy Danielson - Tonight is a night unlike anything I have been a part of.
He pauses for a moment.
Billy Danielson - Tonight is Double Jeopardy. A concept unlike any other. It starts with two matches happening simultaneously, and then the winners face each other as a second phase of the match, with the winner becoming the UWL World Champion.
There’s a look of excitement in his eyes, but there’s something else as well. Maybe it was concern or trepidation regarding his match tonight, or maybe it was some form of determination to get through a match type he had never wrestled before. Whatever it was, he wore it on his sleeve as he continued.
Billy Danielson - Not only is the match something most of us have never seen before, but it poses a difficult path to victory, as you have not one, but two potential opponents. Even then, at any point in the first phase of the match, all three of the competitors can put their hands on you whether you’re facing them or not. So when you take all 4 of the biggest names in this company, who all like beating the hell out of each other, and allow them the opportunity to attack and screw each other over… it is bound to create chaos.
Just thinking about the chaos this match can bring makes Danielson shudder a bit. Neither Cory, Daron, nor Jackson were someone you’d want to cross on a good day. Putting the UWL World Championship on the line, it could end the career of a lesser wrestler.
Billy Danielson - Here’s the thing, though…
Luckily, Billy wasn’t a lesser wrestler. Just thinking of the opportunity in front of him filled him with ideas and strategies to get him to beyond where he already was.
Billy Danielson - I have been right on the cusp of breaking through to another level.
He almost looks like that Ancient Aliens Meme from 2011 the way he brings his hands up and stares wildly into the camera.
Billy Danielson - I’ve been the Television champ. I’ve been the World champ. I’ve been the Prestige champ. I AM the Heritage champ.
Another pause from Danielson as he smirks at the camera again.
Billy Danielson - But I haven’t been a Champ Champ!
There is an urgency in his voice as if his livelihood was dependent on the concept of him becoming a “Champ Champ”.
Billy Danielson - I’m so close to this rare concept of holding the two top championships in the UWL that I can almost taste it. I’m so close to the catalyst that I need to break through to that legendary status, and I know something as chaotic and difficult as a Double Jeopardy match can be. Especially, because I have arguably the most difficult path to victory out of the four of us.
Billy pauses once more as he pictures his path to the Universal Wrestling World Championship and the near-impossible odds stacked against him in this match.
Billy Danielson - In the very first phase, I have to beat the World Champion himself. It is still no secret that I have yet to be able to even win via disqualification against him, let alone pinfall or submission. No matter how good I think I am, somehow Cory always seems to find a way out. Maybe it’s because he’s helped train and mentor me or because he’s an Olympic-level athlete, but we can all see it’s written on the walls. My time is coming. With every match I face Cory in, I get closer and closer to figuring him out and finally beating him.
He balls his fist like he is going to guarantee a victory tonight, but that absolution fades from his face as he awkwardly laughs
Billy Danielson - I want to say I promise tonight is the night that I finally beat Cory, because I know I can, but I also don’t want to get too far ahead of myself but even if I do, there is little doubt that he’ll beat the hell out of me and then I have to face one of two of my most competitive rivals in either Daron Smythe or Jackson Burnside.
Another pause as he knows none of the four men can confidently and accurately predict themselves as the winner, knowing how hard this match will be. Just knowing what he has put Jackson and Daron through in the past and still lost is enough to make anyone question themselves, but it doesn’t stop Danielson from being confident in himself. It’s more an acknowledgment that this is a black diamond level match-up, and Billy is about to go down head first.
Billy Danielson - My history with these men doesn’t need to be recanted again. Whenever I beat one of them, the other beats me and the cycle begins again. The three of us have become the Rock, Paper, and Scissors of this company (and Cory is the jackass who throws his thumb up and screams “DYNAMITE, I WIN”). I know it’s a difficult run, but I’m confident that I can break through and win it all. Winning the first phase would guarantee a new World Champion for the UWL. If I can squeak by an all-time ass-kicking by Cory and FINALLY get my win over him, then there’s solace in knowing that no matter how badly I get beat up and broken, so do they because we all know each other so well.
Billy quietly snickers to himself as he thinks of how this match will put his biggest rivals through the wringer and that he was excited to see that happen up until he had to face them as well.
Billy Danielson - Jackson Burnside is every bit as strong as Cory, so if it’s Daron and me in the final moment, then I know Daron hurts just as much. Daron is just as ring-smart as I am too, so I know if Jackson is my final opponent, Daron will have worked him over until he’s gassed. If I can survive Cory’s ass beating, I can survive theirs, and if I can survive theirs, I can finally hold that UWL World Championship in my hand along with this one here.
Billy undoes his Heritage Championship from his waist and holds it up with both hands out in front of his chest.
Billy Danielson - However, the difficulty doesn’t matter because if I’m going to break and set records in this company if I’m going to make sure I enter my second Hall of Fame, if I’m going to prove that I have earned the right to be called a Champ Champ, then I MUST defeat Cory and Daron and Jackson. I MUST go through the hell and the anarchy that is Double Jeopardy. Most importantly I MUST win because I need to prove to myself that I’m not stagnating in this company.
Afraid to metaphorically sit in the same spot for too long, Danielson was ready to return to the top of the mountain where he felt like he belonged, because staying satisfied with the UWL Heritage Championship felt like he was settling to be second best in the company, and he was tired of feeling like second best.
Billy Danielson - I was so close to winning the Universal Stampede. I was so close to winning the Coronation Cup. I have been so close to reaching that next level and earning my next shot at greatness, that I have to prove that it’s not slipping by me by increasingly better opponents. I’m so tired of being runner-up when I know I’m better. I was able to prove it in Millenium, I was able to prove it in Mainstream, I have proved it here before, but I have to prove it to the UWL once again.
That familiar fire is in Danielson’s eyes as he is finally mentally ready for the main event. He was so close to achieving his goal, now he just had to face the last few hardships before him. Three men will stand before, one of which is a definite opponent, but the other two were potential wrestlers that he knew he could beat so long as he got past the current UWL Champion.
Billy Danielson - I have to prove that I belong in the same hallowed halls as Caleb Hart and Craig Williams, who had the opportunity to monopolize the uppercard of the UWL. I have to prove that I’m not just the Workhorse… I’M THE DAMN G.O.A.T!!!
He lifts one fist in the air and his UWL Heritage Championship with the other hand.
Billy Danielson - And as of now, the only way to do that is to put down the other 3 best wrestlers in this company and once again claim the UWL World Championship!
