UWL superstar "#1" Daron Smythe recently participated in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit and here are a few highlights...
/u/apatheticstatement asked "You've talked a lot of crap about Anthony Cross since coming to UWL and now you get to face him one on one. Do you think you'll still be talking crap after this week's Eruption?!"
Daron: "Look, to be able to get in the ring and do what we do - it's insane when you think about it. It's part ego, part drive, part anxiety. If you don't see yourself being a World Champion one day, you need to get the hell out of this business. So yeah, I talk a little crap to get myself hyped up. In some sports they call it "bulletin board" material. After the Eruption card is posted, the UWL superstars weigh in on who they think will win each match. I see this Anthony Cross guy picking against me every week and it puts a burr in my ass. Who does this guy think he is? I don't care if you're top of the card or the guy cleaning the toilets, I deal in respect. I treat people the way they treat me. I see this guy picking against me, yet I don't really see him doing any winning unless of course it's with the help of his buddy who just so happens to be the World's Champion, Caleb Hart. So, I start asking some questions? Is this guy overrated? What's the deal? I wasn't here to see any past glory and quite frankly, Anthony's seen nothing of me except for my UWL matches. But, I'd like to think in that 2-3 months I've been here, I've been doing better than he has. In fact, I see he's #1 ranked right now and I ask myself, how? If I'm being realistic, I know he didn't get to be Heritage Champion strictly on a fluke, but if I don't think I'm as good as him or better, than what am I even doing in the wrestling business?"
/u/muddledproceeding89 asked "The next pay per view event is Championship Extravaganza on October 29th - who do you hope to face at that event?"
Daron: "As I said before, every wrestler worth a damn pictures himself as the top guy. Having been here a few months now, I can see that everything in UWL is earned and I don't mind doing that at all. A wrestler's natural inclination is to never trust the office, but I think the office realizes that despite the fact that I haven't been here or the UWL for years doesn't mean I'm not a top talent - that's why I got put into the main event with a World Title shot on the line. Maybe the office knew what they were doing? Maybe it was fate? Nick Danger and I get eliminated at the same time. He gets in my way, he gets a piledriver on the floor. I'm looking for a shot at that Television title, I'm looking to make that first step towards eventually becoming World Champion. Who knows? Maybe I make the required number of title defenses and go after the Heritage belt afterwards? We'll learn a lot more after this Saturday's match, that's for sure..."
/u/tomorrow_ugly_vanguard asked "We keep seeing you talk about this old promoter Jim Miller? Can you explain more about the history between the two of you?"
Daron: "Jim is...your classic independent wrestling promoter. He's a con artist. He's a scum bag. He has found a way to exploit loopholes to acquire property. He knows enough people to get breaks on prices and grants to pay for things. He gets other people to do everything for him. Maybe that makes him a genius? I couldn't live like that. There are no depths that guy won't go to to get what he wants and keep what he wants. I'll give you a perfect example. This is a story I haven't told anyone and I'm sure it'll be all over the internet, but here it goes. Years ago, Jim became president of the NWA, right before the TNA deal. He likes to take credit for it happening, but really, that's all the Jarrett's leveraging a name in an attempt to get television. I'm Jim's top guy and I'm thinking in a shoe in to get a deal with TNA. That would make Jim look great, right? That's not how he saw it. No, Jim didn't want to lose his cash cow. The guy who packed the houses, ran his training school, and paid rent in a dilapidated dump he owned. I was ready to make that leap and suddenly I found out my girlfriend, his daughter, is pregnant. I'm scared, mortified even, but eventually, I talk myself down from the ledge. I'll be responsible. I'll put down roots and be a great father and husband. I politely decline the TNA offer and keep doing my thing. I come to find out, she's lying. And guess who put her up to it? Yeah, that's right, dear old Dad. So, I went out in the middle of the ring on his next show and quit, right in front of the fans. Just walked out. I tried to leave wrestling behind forever. But, it's really really hard to get rid of that itch. I scratched it...and here I am..."
