Beyond the Mat
The Story of UWL, The Beginning by Jay Jefferson
We seem to have gotten a shock and electricity into this place that probably only the UWL name could do. So I am going to give some of you who don’t know, who want to know, or who already know a few writings, or however many I feel like doing, of the backstory of UWL and how it came to be, and some things I want to get off my chest from having this place since 2005. So with that said, away we go.
When UWL was created, I had run Feds before. But I always got disillusioned with the petty and BS that comes with running a fed, especially a RP fed. I was competing in a few places at the time as an active member. I found myself back in the fed where I got my start, in More Power Wrestling (MPW). If you’ve heard me before, you know how bad MPW was. But there was something about it that made it fun amongst all the chaos. The fed head at the time, Jamez, was not wanting to do the day-to-day work that it takes to run a fed. During a MSN chat, yes, those were the shat back in the day. During a MSN group chat, listening to him explain why he was not wanting to do the day-to-day but wanted to remain the "fed head" and keep the place open, I stepped up and said, Listen I’ll take over as a true booker. I’ll book the cards, run the angles, and work up the results. During my time booking with MPW, I can honestly say MPW was back on track. For reasons that I still do not know to this day. The fed head came back into play and said you’re making it look easy. I am taking over your duties. I said ok and left the fed as did most of the roster once he took over. So now I had the bug to run my own place again. I didn’t want it to be like everyone else's. I proceeded to look around for ideas of just what to do and what type of place I wanted to have. I looked over the GameFAQs efed board, which was the hot place, and I mean hot place, to post your fed back in the day. I looked over all the feds, and all I saw were ECW rip-offs in one form or another. Every fed was Extreme something, or Xtreme. You’d also see a lot of feds that were international brands that were WWE rip offs to the max. I didn’t want to do that. I didn’t want to write hardcore matches and all that junk. If there was a cage match, no rules, a tables match, or something to that effect, I wanted it to mean something and have a story behind it. So I decided I wanted to do a territory-style fed. I knew I wanted it to be green, too. Because at the time Pro-Wrestling NOAH was hot and I was a huge fan. I went through a few name ideas and settled on two that were similar, UWN and UWL, both Universal Wrestling. I was going to run weekly. I didn’t want the TV show to have a name. All the feds had their TV shows with these rip off names from WWE. I didn’t want that. I wanted to fully embrace the body of a territory in today’s world. Our TV shows were "TV tapings," and our PPV events were not on PPV. They were "supercards." I wanted to be as realistic as possible. There’s no way a small start-up territory would jump right to PPV. I wanted to promote and book realism as much as I could in this game, which I still do to this day, btw. So I had the concept, the idea, and we were off and running. I posted an advertisement on Gamefaqs and had people join, some of whom I knew from my MPW days. On December 14, 2005, we had our first card with two matches, lol. We crowned our first Heritage Champion, and we were off and running.
