A previously recorded sign pops up on the television as we open up to Billy Danielson in his Chicago Home. Usually, when we see him, he’s in his championship room surrounded by the accolades he has earned in his 8-year career. However, this time he’s sitting at a table on his second-story porch as he enjoys the crisp winter air. He reaches over for a coffee mug that sits right next to his UWL Heritage Championship and takes a sip, savoring it for a moment before letting out a sigh.
Billy Danielson - “Robert… Robb… Robbie… Roberto… Bert-Bert….”
His face slowly turns from joyful to disgusted as each iteration of Robert Daniels’ name passes through his lips.
Billy Danielson - “However you feel like stylizing your name this week, I’m starting to get suspicious here.”
Billy takes another sip of his coffee, but it only takes the disgust away from him for a second.
Billy Danielson - “Yes, you used my finisher as a little ” statement piece”, but I have read you for the filth you are, and you have said nothing to confirm nor deny.”
The UWL Heritage Champion shakes his head. To him, his former mentor and current rival’s silence says everything Billy needs to know.
Billy Danielson - “I think you’re scared. I think you’re scared and it’s all because you know you can’t beat me. That’s why you assaulted me last month and why you can’t seem to find the words that I just KNOW you want to say, because you’ve never had trouble running your big mouth before. I think you’re scared and so you’re dragging it out. You want me on edge so you can try and capitalize on some half-attentive paranoia. You want to be able to cost me my Heritage Championship like you did with the TV and World Championships. I won’t allow it this time though, Robb.”
Billy takes another sip of his coffee and chuckles to himself for a second.
Billy Danielson - “To quote a famous American Poet, ‘Fool me one time, shame on you. Fool me twice, can’t put the blame on you. Fool me three times, forget the peace signs, load the chopper, and let it rain on you’.”
He points a little finger gun at the camera and pretends to pull the trigger to emphasize the point of the little J. Cole excerpt there.
Billy Danielson - “That being said, what a night to try and cost me the title, right Robert?”
Switching his coffee mug out for his Heritage Championship, Billy throws his belt over his shoulder and looks at it with a big smile. There’s a little excitement for his upcoming match against the UWL Television Champion, but he’s still more focused on his feud with Robert Daniels.
Billy Danielson - “A champion versus champion bout where it’s my title on the line against a young and hungry Jenna Jillian Walker. I mean the opportunity is right there, and it makes sense too, because JJDub has been on a TEAR as of late, and that’s probably why she has this match.”
One more sip of his coffee as Billy starts his segue into talking about his match at Eruption this week.
Billy Danielson - “But let’s talk about Jenna Jillian Walker for a second, yeah?”
He throws a finger up in the air as if signifying a point he is about to make.
Billy Danielson - “It’s hard to look at a champion, and tell them they don’t deserve to be where they are.”
Billy looks at the camera with a cold and cautious look, as if unsure of what the reaction to the statement he just made would be, but he continues anyway.
Billy Danielson - “Now Jenna, that isn’t me saying you aren’t deserving of the UWL Television Championship. You very much are.”
He pauses for a moment to carefully collect his words.
Billy Danielson - “However, the right to face me comes when you have had at least 3 defenses and you choose to vacate the Television Championship for the next title up.”
He puts up 2 fingers and shakes his head.
Billy Danielson - “You are only at 2. You still need one more defense to earn the right to challenge for my Heritage Championship.”
Billy pauses again, this time looking at his Heritage Championship. He thinks back on when he was UWL TV Champion and Anthony Cross refused to let him challenge for the UWL Heritage Championship when he got his 3 defenses, and then was robbed of his championship altogether shortly after. Despite not thinking Jenna was ready, he did promise that he would never gatekeep his championships from those who wanted to try their luck with the next step up. He smiles and takes another sip of coffee before speaking again.
Billy Danielson - “But it’s fine with me because in some ways this can be a preview for what's to come in a few weeks when you do get that third and final defense. This can be the time you face the boss before you’re ready, so you bulk up and level up and come back stronger than you were the last time.”
He chuckles, but not out of arrogance. More at the idea of Billy being the inevitable final boss of the Universal Wrestling League. He always wanted to be in that role, like Caleb Hart and Craig Williams before him, and now he might as well be and he’s opening that door for maybe someone else to step up one day (something Robb Daniels could never do).
Billy Danielson - “On top of all of that, I needed a better test anyway. Having beaten Jackson Burnside to and fro and watching him still somehow move his way up to the next level has left me in a weird gap. I’m sure as a champion you see the same gap I’m talking about.”
Billy motions out to the metaphorical field of challengers and the gaps between them.
Billy Danielson - “UWL has a big roster, but not a lot of worthy challengers. Especially for us “Mid Card’ Champions. Even though I believe that any title I hold is THE championship and the highest prize, everyone at our level wants to face Cory and earn the prestige of calling themselves a WORLD Champion.”
He shakes his head, wishing there were more people to face him at a truly challenging level.
Billy Danielson - “And so we settle for the rest. I won’t name names, but I’m sure they know who they are.”
He shrugs.
Billy Danielson - “Facing another champion is nice. It’s refreshing, and though I promise that you aren’t ready for me just yet, it’ll be interesting to see what you’re made of and whether or not the hype is there. I had doubts and concerns about the legitimacy of Daron Smythe at one time, and now look at him.”
Billy chuckles at how ridiculous that sounds in the current landscape of UWL, but 2 years ago was a very different time.
Billy Danielson - “So show me what you’ve got, Jenna. Show me the woman who beat BRADDOCK and Sonya Benson. Show me what the future of the Heritage title scene looks like. Take my mind off of Robb Daniels and his ridiculous obsession with me and the success he sees me have, but can’t seem to claim himself.”
He pats his Heritage Championship a couple of times, as if inviting JJW to come and give it her all.
Billy Danielson - “Make me feel alive again, Jenna… if only for a night.”
He smirks at the camera.
Billy Danielson - “Can you do that?”
Billy Danielson - “Robert… Robb… Robbie… Roberto… Bert-Bert….”
His face slowly turns from joyful to disgusted as each iteration of Robert Daniels’ name passes through his lips.
