Beyond the Mat
The rebirth of UWL by Jay Jefferson
I'd been wanting to add to the "Beyond the Mat" section for sometime, but I never could find the right thing to write about. I mean, hey, I'm the man always writing, results, control centers, booking cards, so I am all over the board, lol. I was sitting here thinking. Hey, I should talk about the rebirth of UWL. A lot has changed for me personally since went away at the end of 2017. I am married now, and had been away from the game for almost two years. Yes, I kept up with the game, but not as closely as I did when I was operating UWL the first time around. I was almost at times consumed with the game, but I knew when I walked away from my computer to leave it there. To be honest at the end of UWL first run, I was burnt out, yes I admit it. I did everything myself for a weekly fed. Sometimes, I'd no more get a show up, and I was writing on the next. I would talk to the owner of Lion's Road, Kevin whom I've known in the game since 2004, and the owner of Seattle Pro, who I know IRL, Robb Daniels. Kevin would tell me of this easy schedule he had with LR. I was intrigued, and I got back in. Yes, when I thought I was out, this game sucked me back in. So, I opened UWL. The schedule was easy, it worked, I loved it. Then my computer broke down, then I got married, and I was out, or was I.
Then in September 2018, I was talking to Robb and Kevin in one of our group chats on Twitter. I realized I still loved this game. I still had ideas I wanted to present and stories to tell, and to provide a place for people to express their stories, and their characters. I was thinking of names for this new project. But, Robb suggested bring back UWL. I said, "What, UWL?" The more I thought about it, the more I knew it was the time for UWL to return. But not under the same style as before. No way I could do a weekly schedule now days, with a wife, and life that goes around that. I went back to the UWL style, bi-weekly, word limit, and I knew it would work. I knew how I wanted UWL to be presented from a "booking" perspective. I wanted finishers to matter, not always does a match have to end with the person's finisher, so when it's hit, wow it means something. I wanted showcase "show promo's" in the ring and in the arena. When you see something in the back it means something and you say "Hey they're in the back" I wanted wins and loses, even though we're RP aka Promo based I wanted wins and losses to mean something. Even if you lose it means something and you can build something from it. I wanted the booking to be simple, but well solid stories built around what the talent feels and wants to express. I wanted to use a new board. Yes, I want to honor the history of the past, but I want us to focus on the new era and building the future.
The response was amazing. Just advertising on Twitter, we're as talented as ever. We have a great core that wants to do their best and present the best fed they can to make UWL the best around once again. Every week we see improvement in all areas. We're building the new era and it's great to see people working together wanting to make the best fed experience possible. So that's the small story behind the return of UWL and the creation of the new era.
